HMIS® - Hazardous Materials Identification System
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions About HMIS® System Enhancements:
- I heard HMIS® labels are a little different now. What has changed?
- Can I keep using my existing stock of old-style HMIS® labels?
- What are the new Icons?
Q: I heard HMIS® labels are a little different now. What has changed?
A: The HMIS® label is revised replacing Reactivity with Physical Hazard. The label also has a new look. A border makes the label visually distinctive, while colors used on the label are OSHA compliant following the most recent American National Standard Safety Color Code (ANSI Z535.1-1998).
Q: Can I keep using my existing stock of old-style HMIS® labels?
A: No. The flammability and physical hazard rating criteria for HMIS® have been updated to better align with the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. Previous versions of HMIS® utilized the NFPA® 704 "Recommended System for the Identification of the Fire Hazards of Materials" to determine flammability and reactivity. Only the new labels have the physical hazard category. If you wish to use an existing supply of labels, it is suggested that you use them up and then transition to HMIS® III. A step-by-step procedure for transitioning from older versions of the HMIS® to the HMIS® III is contained in Chapter 1 of the Implementation Manual
A: Icons are available to identify specific PPE, target organs, and physical hazards. The Icons support "at a glance" hazard recognition and aid employers with internal product labeling, informing employees of the specific nature of the chemical hazard as emphasized by OSHA, and in the training program required by the HCS. Icon stickers are now available for Target Organs, Physical Hazards, and PPE.
