Fluorosurfactant-free Resin for Industrial Wood Coatings
Engineered Polymer Solutions (EPS) has launched EPS® 2460, a new all-acrylic polymer without fluorosurfactants and APEO surfactants for flat-through semigloss coatings. According to the company, the new polymer offers flow and leveling, adhesion, hardness development, and block and chemical resistance.
EPS 2460 was designed for factory-applied high-performance exterior pigmented wood coatings used in a range of applications such as decks, shutters, windows, doors and joinery, and interior applications such as kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

Portable Goniometer for Determining Surface Energy
DataPhysics Instruments has launched the PCA 200, the first handheld, portable contact angle goniometer for autonomous and mobile measurement of the surface energy of solid surfaces. The device, which can be used wirelessly, was developed as an alternative to test inks for quality control and production, and it employs a quantitative, reproducible measurement methodology.
The lightweight device, which is about the size of a digital camera, provides a live preview image of the surface to ensure the measurement is being taken in precisely the right place. It can dispense the test liquids diiodomethane and water simultaneously, and directly measure their contact angles on the solid sample. It is also equipped with a lithium-ion battery for a long operating time.

Powder Coating to Counter Heat Build-up
AkzoNobel has launched Interpon D2525 Low Solar Absorption, a powder coating designed to reduce the thermal stress on coated surfaces. According to the company, the product’s low-absorption technology prevents the unwanted build-up of heat from being deflected from the coated surface into buildings, which helps mitigate the creation of urban heat islands that can form in densely built environments. It contains a special pigment that helps reflect a large part of the near-infrared radiation—which makes up more than 50% of the total irradiated solar energy—from any aluminum substrate that it coats. The company reports that when measured against Total Solar Reflectance—the measurement for the reflective performance of a coated surface—the Interpon D2525 Low Solar Absorption achieves a high reflectance value of up to 65%.
The new powder coating is free of VOCs and is available in a range of colors and finishes that can be customized on request. It is also supported by an Environmental Product Declaration—an independent verification of a product’s environmental impact across its whole lifespan, from initial production to end-of-life disposal or recycling.

Micronized Wax for Water-based Wood Coatings
Lubrizol has announced the availability of Lanco™ PEW 1556 micronized wax. The hydrophilically modified polyethylene wax is designed to provide a broad range of aesthetic and protective benefits for water-based wood coating systems, allowing formulators to transition from solvent-based systems while maintaining excellent slip, scratch, and abrasion resistance. The company says the new wax additive provides a uniform and efficient matte finish, clarity, slip, and a smooth feel. It is also designed to enable control over gloss to achieve the desired appearance, while preserving the natural color of the wood and pleasant tactile feel.
